5.0 out of 5 stars It does everything I want

I purchased a Samsung Galaxy A7 Lite 8.7 inch LTE tablet (Wifi) to replace an ~9 year old Barnes and Noble Nook HD+ which is a 9-inch tablet with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080, and weighs about 515g. Compared to the Nook which I was very pleased with and is still working well, the Samsung is so much faster and easier to hold with one hand.

I am using it primarily as a book reader to replace the Nook. In addition, it is used for web browsing for reading news, as well as helping to solve puzzles and crosswords.

As a long time Linux user, I have a preference for non-proprietary/open source software, and therefore did not consider any offerings by Apple etc. I have installed Firefox and Chromium, and Aldiko (personal favourite for book reading). I downloaded the apps as APKs as I do not have a Google account and have no wish to have one, and I do not use social media. Alongside these apps, the only other one that I have installed is for my VPN, which I have set up to start automatically and run continuously.

For its price and performance, I believe it is very good value and does everything I want. It boots from cold to my home screen with my VPN auto-starting in about 50 seconds. From standby/screen off, it takes about 5 seconds including entering the passcode. Compared to a dedicated book reader, I feel that one of these is so much better value. I can use my preferred book reader app, as well as use it for other purposes. For me, the screen is perfectly good enough, it is clear and easy to read, nothing blurry about it. It is snappy, no pauses or hesitation switching between or while using apps, or any of the problems that some people seem to be reporting. Yes, one can always find a ‘superior’ tablet for just those ‘few extra pounds’, eg An Apple, other Samsungs etc, but where do you stop?. For £119, I believe this is very good value for what is does and I very pleased with it and have no regrets at all.

I have measured the screen/tablet dimensions that people may find useful (attached image).

Good size, slim bezel, good screen, fast enough for my needs (though I don't game on it).

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good tablet

This is a very decent tablet at a reasonable price. I've had it for a year now and I'm happy with it. I use it for streaming apps, music learning apps and occasionally some mobile games.

It's pretty lightweight and slim which I like as it makes it very portable, easy to carry around in my satchel or laptop bags. I like the general design as it's very modern and has good aesthetics.

The screen is bright and colourful, it has a good resolution and dpi for this size of screen and for the current price point. It provides a good level of clarity and quality when watching movies and playing games. The touch screen works really well and feels quite responsive. Samsung are well known for making great screens and this is one of them.

Next to performance. Battery level is pretty good overall, but does drop quite quickly when running more visually intensive apps. It's generally sufficient for a few hours at a time so it's good enough in my book. It does take a while to charge to full but it's pretty comparable to other devices of this price range.

General performance is overall very good. I am able to get a mostly steady frame frame when playing mobile games and streaming is consistently stable. I do occasionally have lag when using up too much memory, and it can take a while to power up from off, but this is rare and I get a largely solid performance from the cpu and memory in this tablet.

Overall, this is a very good tablet. Samsung are one of my favourite tech companies as I've always had consistently good products from them, and this is no exception. If you're looking for a slim, portable tablet with solid performance and a great display, then I recommend this A7 lite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the box

Studied some options before choosing this one. I needed a tablet that is physically small but doesn't compromise on screen quality or usability. Not interested in paying Apple prices so I wanted Android.

The screen is good, it's large enough to use the keyboard easily and the text prediction/auto correct is very good when writing documents or emails. It took hardly any time to set up and has taken me little time to get used to it. I should have bought a case for it at the time - silly me! - but that's been rectified now.

This tablet is excellent so far. Video streaming is good, sound quality is good through the speakers and touch response is fine for my purpose. I don't want it for gaming so I can't comment on that but general surfing is fine.
I haven't used it for long periods yet but the battery life seems to be ok. The charger is a bit slow but luckily I have a faster one from another device so it's not an issue for me.
Very pleased with the product!

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly an improvement over my previous tablet. (Huawei). Review edited later

I'm going to get into trouble here as I own Apple, Amazon and Android tablets/phones/readers, so, comparisons are inevitable I'm afraid.

Bottom line: what do you want? Glorious, fast, iOS? Then pay lots of money. But that choice is hard to use in sunlight. A text (ebook) reader? Then Kindle is the winner. Good outdoors and simple. Yes, but e-books do not stop at Amazon and the device is pre-historic in features. A cheap, Android device? No, Amazon with its emasculated "Fire" tablet does not qualify! Ah! How about Huawei? Yeah, but it's basic and slow unless you spend Apple prices. Then it's on to another, better, Android - maybe Samsung? Or, is this another expensive sub-optimum option?

So, what about the "cheap" Samsung Tab A7 Lite? Well, iOS it is not (weird Android graphics!), but the screen is not bad and the speed eats Huawei alive. It works as a reader, on any e-book format and it feels OK. Outdoors in sun? Still a no-no, but Kindle is a fallback. For a few ££ more, it's a lot better than Hauwei!

I could get to like this tablet. But Android - please can we have grown up graphics and colours?

Subsequent Edit: I'm not sure what the complaints elsewhere about the display screen are about. A photo is certainly brighter and colour less precise than my iPad Pro or iPhone X, but considering the price differences it is not bad! The face recognition, on the other hand, is dire! If I pick up my iphone it has recognised me as I raise it, ditto iPad. Samsung does not even allow me to wear my glasses and only works sporadically even without glasses. However, I originally gave 3 stars - considering how good value it is, I now think at £145 it really is worth 4.
